Leaky Gut in North Portland
Our bodies, like our minds, have evolved a lot since the time humans have been plopped on this blue( slowly turning brown) planet.
This means that our bodies can’t handle certain food, certain chemicals in our food, anymore, and giving our body those foods will cause unfavorable reactions from our bodies.
One such case is the leaky gut.
Overcoming Leaky Gut in North Portland OR:
We all have gut linings and our gut linings have semi-permeable openings, which allow water and nutrients to flow through from the gut to the bloodstream while keeping the bad bacteria, unnecessary toxins in check.
Poor nutrition, alcohol consumption, infections, autoimmune disorders, such as lupus, diabetes, stress can cause the gut to get inflamed, good bacteria ensuring proper working of the gut to die, the permeability of the gut opening to increase and go into overdrive(hyper).
The hyperpermeability of the gut allows the toxins, bacteria, excess water, etc. to flow or leak into the bloodstream.
Henceforth, “Leaky gut”.
Now, leaky gut is linked with a lot of health issues, the toxins and other unnecessary, harmful stuff leaking into the bloodstream causes a lot of issues.
Especially when it is quite hard to diagnose.
One of the side effects of Leaky gut is weight gain.
How?
- The imbalance of gut bacteria causes an increase in a type of chemical in our body(Lipopolysaccharide) to leak into our bloodstream, which in high levels triggers obese and Type 2 diabetic metabolic response, which causes weight gain.
- There is also a sensitivity to foods ( food intolerances) which is in order to prevent further damage to the gut but causes weight gain due to the slowed metabolism which is the body’s adaptive immune response.
- The leaky gut ( while being caused by nutritional deficiencies) can cause nutritional deficiencies, in which case, the body will not get the nutrients it needs to build muscle and bone, create energy, burn sugar and fat, and keep mood normal which in turn slows the metabolism as a necessary sacrifice to complete the other roles and to save more nutrition and fat ( which is a defensive response)
It is very easy to mistake leaky gut for cramps, simple stomach ache, stomach burn, acidity, etc.
But, go to the doctors and get yourself checked out if you have:
- Fatigue
- Foggy brain
- Headaches
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Abdominal pain
- Irregular stools
- Reflux/heartburn
- Rosacea

- Reduce your use of NSAIDs. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, can increase intestinal permeability,
- Take probiotic supplements. The beneficial bacteria of probiotics are considered helpful for many gastrointestinal conditions. Fermented food like kimchi, Kefir, bananas, probiotic yogurt, berries, etc. help.
- Reduce your stress levels.
- Reduce your alcohol intake.

- Remove foods you are intolerant to or eliminate unhealthy foods like saturated fats, red meat, processed foods, etc.
